Your Daily '80s: Remember Ma Bell?


In 1983, there was the phone company. Singular.

Her name was Ma Bell.

Life was so simple then.

Simpler? Yeah. But a phone call cost me 20x what it will cost now, adjusted for inflation.

Didn't say monopolies were spiffy. But the lowering of long-distance rates also partly could be a function of better technology . . . and the firing of approximately a zillion unionized phone workers over the past two and change decades.

Good thing long distance is cheap. That Radio Shack (or Burger King) paycheck only goes so far.

Now, let's explain why Internet service is much slower (and much more expensive) here than in many other countries.
