Simply '70s: The hottest car of the decade

Meet the Ford Pinto -- new for the '71 model year.

Look at that baby! It's "a little carefree car to put a little kick in your life."

I'll say!

Now now. Let's be fair. Remember they didn't have CAD (Computer Assisted Design) back then. These days you can do the equivalent of 10,000 crash tests on a computer before you even build the thing. Cars are -- no joke -- three to four times safer today than they were back in those days.

Besides, if you want horrible death in a tin can today, all ya gotta buy is a SmartCar.

Ford knew there was a problem. That's been established.

They had a better gas tank but decided not to go with it because of costs. That's been established, too.

And Pintos tended to blow up when rear-ended. That's a historical fact, of which this post takes note.
