3 Chords & the Truth: Your musical answer

This week, we answer a simple yet crucial question in putting together yet another fine edition of 3 Chords & the Truth -- did Steven Tyler always look this bad?

So we got out the vintage 1975 vinyl of Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic. And then we looked at the group shot on the back cover.

And your answer is this: Yes. Yes he did.

How Liv Tyler emerged from that gene pool, I don't know.

That's the kind of burning question we're happy to answer on the Big Show . . . and, uh, we also like to play lots of good music, too. As far as telling you anything else about this week's show, I can only shamelessly repeat what was said about the last episode of 3 Chords & the Truth.

Here you go:

THIS TIME, like every time on the Big Show, we play a little bit of this, a lot of that and some of the other thing. All of it comes with our iron-clad guaran-damn-tee that you'll love it or your money back.

Of course, the program costs you absolutely nothing, so there's that.

Then there's this: You're likely to say at least once, "My God, I haven't heard that in years!" Try that listening to the radio. You see, this little venture, hosted by your Mighty Favog, is like radio back when radio was actually radio.

Call it, if you will, freeform radio with a bigger playlist and a lot less reefer and patchouli oil. OK, maybe a little patchouli oil when the spirit moves us.

IT'S 3 Chords & the Truth, y'all. Be there. Aloha.

I'd have to say Tyler didn't look QUITE as bad then. Bad, yes. But not quite as bad, and it's not just age. There's a certain ... "avilessement" ... at any age with him. I love that word. It's one of those words that we don't quite have a word for in English. It literally means "debasement," but it also is most often said with a sigh, and used in a context suggesting pity -- as in reference to an old hooker hung-over with smeared makeup the night after Mardi Gras. And she gets up and showers, drinks a Bloody Mary, slathers her makeup back on, and heads back out. "Ah, poor thing, eh?" Even as a teen, I sort of liked the band, but I certainly never thought of Tyler as a sex symbol. I mean, after all there was Robert Plant, and what heterosexual female could avert her eyes from THAT? And Neil Young was still cute in his own unique way. And there was Roger Daltrey .... and well, you get it. Mick Jagger also looked good then, in a rough-cut bad-boy sort of way. And I think Mick is a good comparison. Angular features, a mouth you could park a car in, not a "pretty" man, but Mick had "sexy" down to an art in his performance. And I think he has aged much better than Tyler -- leathery-faced, yes, but he dresses well, and maintains a dignified and witty personality offstage, while still gettin' it on in a band working for 50 years. Not too shabby. Even Keith Richards looks better than Steve Tyler! At least he usually looks cheerful. As to Tyler's daughter? I've seen stunning people emerge from downright ugly parents. Genes have a funny way of flipping an allele one way or the other for Dad's cheekbones (Tyler passed down cheekbones that look haggard on a man but make a woman look like a model), Mom's eyes ... everything else from Mom ... and his daughter is the result.
