We apologize if Sweden is offended

We further apologize to Finland, because it just got in the way. But at least now we'll be rid of those damned Swedish vodka ads.

BECAUSE SWEDEN is now Russia, and we're all drinking Stolichnaya.

From The Associated Press:

The Absolut vodka company apologized Saturday for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers.

The campaign, which promotes ideal scenarios under the slogan "In an Absolut World," showed a 1830s-era map when Mexico included California, Texas and other southwestern states. Mexico still resents losing that territory in the 1848 Mexican-American War and the fight for Texas independence.

But the ads, which ran only in Mexico and have since ended, came as the United States builds up its border security amid an emotional debate over illegal immigration from their southern neighbor.

(snip)

Absolut said the ad was designed for a Mexican audience and intended to recall "a time which the population of Mexico might feel was more ideal."

"As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market, and for that we apologize."

I think they should make an ad giving back those provinces to Denmark which they stole in 1658 (after which followed 200 years of forcibly making the inhabitants Swedes).

In december 2007, a Danish parliamentarian joked we should take those areas back. The Swedes didn't think it was funny. In all, they have no humour of any significance.

No need to appologize to Finland for being included in Russia on your map there: Both Finland and Sweden have been thouroughly and notoriously pro-Soviet in its political culture and climate throughout the Cold War and into the present.

By the by, approximately 60% of modern-day Sweden itself is located on lands conquered from neighboring nations and peoples during the 17th and 18th centuries. And so in an "Absolut" (??) world, Sweden would comprise only the great lakes districts and most of the east coast.

Dmitri >>> At least the Finns have an excuse, for they lived with the Soviet fist in their back for 40 years, and they did fight for their country in WW II.

Although the Swedes were neutral in the cold war and officially criticised the west, they had secret agreements with NATO so they would come and help in case of Soviet invasion. I think it was smart after all. It is better to be hypocrite than stupid.
