While we were waiting for Britney's demise . . .

As The Associated Press works up an obituary on Britney Spears for use on newspaper front pages across the globe when the inevitable happens -- barring some dramatic, miraculous response to saving grace by the tortured pop tart -- it took a little digging through America's news conduits to find this obituary.

AND THAT'S WRONG on so many levels.

For one thing, the Kingston Trio's John Stewart -- who joined the folk group in 1961 after writing songs for it over several years -- was noted for his artistry. He was respected for his songwriting. And Rolling Stone named his 1969 solo work, California Bloodlines, one of the 200 best albums ever recorded.

Brit Brit -- God help her -- is notable primarily for her distaste for knickers . . . and for being an unfit parent. But when she goes, by God, you'll know about it.

In fact, it'll be as big a deal as Princess Di -- albeit in a double-wide kind of way.

Life ain't fair. Death, either. We, with our unquenchable thirst for the worst our culture has to offer, make sure of that.

As my little protest against that sad reality, here, please, is the Kingston Trio on the Andy Williams Show in 1966.
